I was recently asked about what motivates staff & clients, specifically seeking clarification as to whether there were cross generational differences that need to be considered.
Of course, there are immediate variations in work experience based on when you were born, which undoubtedly will have an impact on lived experience. It is therefore to be expected that these will impact your core values and life expectations, which in turn will be key to your individual motivation.

Technological advances will play a critical factor. Younger generations, such as Millennials and Gen Z, are typically more comfortable with digital communication tools, whereas older generations might prefer traditional face-to-face interactions.
The introduction of digital technology also introduces options to the workplace not previously held. It is often claimed that younger generations are strong advocates for flexible work arrangements with an increased focus on work life balance. This may indeed be due to the fact they are aware of the options of hybrid working that was not achievable to older working groups.
Despite this, I would always look to avoid blanket statements. None of us can look to categories an individual’s needs based on their year of birth. Whilst expectations on what is deemed ‘normal’ has undoubtedly changed, we must remember the importance of individual recognition.
Everyone will undoubtedly have their own back story, sense of direction or purpose that motivates them.
Every good leader should take the time to listen.
